WEBINAR: Get Your Super Into Shape

It’s time to talk booty. No, not the Kim Kardashian kind – we are talking cash booty. The healthy looking balance with lots of zeros that we all hope to see in our superannuation fund at the end of our long working lives. A pool of funds that will allow us to live a comfortable, dignified retirement, with enough extra to spend on the things that bring you joy.

Retirement might seem a long way off for some of you but that’s why it’s even more important to pay attention to your super now: tiny changes you make now could have a huge impact on your quality of life when you retire. For those of you closer to the end game, it’s time to think tax effective strategies, and salary sacrificing.

So whether your superannuation is a pile of unopened envelopes gathering dust in your drawer, or you have an excel spreadsheet to die for, there’ll be something for everyone in this webinar. A special thank you to our expert Danielle Ludowyke of HESTA joining 10thousandgirl CEO Zoe Lamont for this webinar.

FAQs, EXTRA TOOLS, TIPS & RESOURCES:

The big question, how much super do I need? It all depends on whether you want a ‘modest’ or ‘comfortable’ retirement… aka tinned beans or travel? The ASFA SuperGuru site defines what this means for you.

How do I know if I’m tracking to my retirement goal? Try the MoneySmart Retirement Planning Calculator.

How to choose the right investment option inside super? Call your fund for advice, or do this Free Risk Profile Tool.

Any tips when comparing super funds? Use this Free Super Review Worksheet to guide you through what to look out for when comparing the different funds.

Don’t know where to start? Check out the ATO’s 5 Step Super Check.

I’m pretty young, am I better contributing extra to super or paying off my mortgage? A common question. Remember small amounts added early lead to a big nest egg down the track (compound interest…), but on the flip side you can’t access super for a long time so you need to have some savings and investments outside of super for two reasons: 1/ an emergency buffer and 2/ to ensure you can achieve your short and medium life goals.

What happens to super if I move overseas? Tips from SuperGuru and the Australian Tax Office.

What’s the impact of a career break on my super? Many people, women especially, take time out to care for children or elderly parents. Check out the MoneySmart Career Breaks Calculator to find out what you can do to improve your super balance.

Am I eligible for the Government superannuation co-contribution? This super co-contribution calculator helps you find out if you are eligible for a co-contribution from the Government and how much you can get if you are eligible. More info on this from the ATO…

FINAL TIPS FROM OUR EXPERT, DANIELLE LUDOWYKE FROM HESTA:

In your 20’s or 30’s? Time is on your side, ACT NOW.

  • Save fees by consolidating your super into 1-2 funds (before you do this check you’re not loosing a potentially irreplaceable insurance policy and get advice if you’re unsure).
  • Make sure you actively choose the right investment choice for you.
  • Income Protection insurance can be valuable for young people, it provides you with an income stream to look after yourself if you are unable to work due to illness or accident.
