EXERCISE: A loving kindness meditation

Happy New Year!

One of my goals for the coming year is to increase my daily happiness levels and ability to ooze love unconditionally into the world. With 2015 bringing a new baby, a house move, an over-ambitious work schedule, a surprise retrenchment for my husband and a few emotional ups and downs, not helped by the constant negative throb of bad news by the media, I’ve found myself slipping into a pattern of busy self centred-ness. In the process I’ve recognised that I’m far more productive, upbeat and aware and kind to others when I feel loved and happy on the inside so here’s the plan to shift my ways!

Some of the actions I’ve started to take are:

  • Strengthen my love for myself and others – a daily loving kindness meditation (see some research and a downloadable PDF below)
  • Care for the environment (and our health!) – I’m aiming to have our house toxin free by the end of 2016 (or as close as possible, gotta have a goal right!), so as a first step I’ve started by purchasing our household cleaning agents from Resparkle, Australian made non toxic cleaning products who pledge a proportion of their profits to providing clean water in Ethiopia.
  • Broaden my perspectives – I said to my husband a month or so ago that I want to start reading again, it’s been years! For Christmas he gave me Rosie Batty’s book which I’m devouring at every possible chance, it is mind blowing. When I’m too tired to read we listen to a TED Talk before going to sleep.

Would love to hear your goals and any ideas to boost energy and love. So please share.

If you’re interested in starting a simple mediation practice, download this DIY loving kindness meditation. This is a meditation of soft care, concern, tenderness, loving kindness, friendship – creating a feeling of warmth for oneself and others. The process is first one of softening, breaking down barriers that we feel inwardly toward ourselves, and then those that we feel toward others.

A LOVING KINDNESS MEDITATION.

Already I’m seeing changes. Instead of being pulled down by the mainstream media throb of bad news, I’m changing my news channels …as good things did happen in 2015. We can focus on the mass murders of IS (which of course they want us to do) or instead recognise and focus on the positive game changing world plays, including:

  • Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi leading an opposition landslide election victory in Myanmar ending absolute army rule. A fresh start was also enjoyed by Argentina and others.
  • Iran and the western powers reached a landmark agreement on circumscribing Tehran’s controversial nuclear programme.
  • There were signs of progress on the global effort to fight climate change, after negotiators from nearly 200 countries signed up to an ambitious deal.
  • In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel inspired many across Europe by opening her country’s borders to Middle Eastern refugees, at considerable cost to her personal political position.
  • In China, the Communist party revoked its oppressive one-child policy.

“Breathe it all in. Love it all out” is my mantra for 2016.

And I find that as I chip away and change myself, I change what I see, and as I change what I see I feel my energy returning and my heart filling again with love to spill out into the world.

Wishing you safe and love-fuelled adventures for the coming year,

Zoe
