PROGRAM OUTLINE-01

How am I supporting microfinance by joining the program?

For each woman who joins the 6 Step Challenge and learns to manage and invest their income wisely, $10 of their program fees are contributed to microloans for women in a neighbouring country who don’t have access to traditional lending institutes. The loan is provided along with business training until she can set up an income stream supporting herself, her family and in some cases employing others in the community. 10thousandgirl is partnering with Good Return and Opportunity International to provide microloans.

What is the GIG program?

Register your group and we’ll send you your materials and provide you with access to the online learning and support hub. Your group can choose to meet weekly (complete the program over 6 weeks), fortnightly (complete the program over 12 weeks), or monthly (complete the program over 6 months).

Supported by hardcopy workbooks, interactive webinars, videos and online materials, 10thousandgirl supplies the 6 Step personal finance program with an agenda and learning materials for each meeting, and you let your group know what time, where you’re meeting and who’s bringing tea, treats or wine.

PROGRAM OUTLINE-01

How does the program work?

Each time your group meets, together you’ll complete a step of the 10thousandgirl Money Makeover program. An agenda packed with learning outcomes, tips, case studies, resources, practical exercises, talking points and expert videos will guide your GIG through each Step.

Each GIG member receives checklists, reflection sheets, templates, planning tools and resource materials to follow along so you’re building your own personal plan as you go.

For additional support, your GIG can be paired with an industry mentor who can attend all or some of your meetings (up to you!). National webinars are available at different times for further Q&A online.

How much does the program cost?

The program is available for $149 per member. It usually costs $420 per program, but lucky for you it’s been subsidised by generous sponsors and partners.

How often do we meet? How long is the program?

The core Money Makeover program is 6 x 2 hour meetings which cover the life planning and personal finance basics. Your group can choose to meet weekly (over 6 weeks), fortnightly (over 12 weeks) or monthly (over 6 months). If after that you’re interested in getting further into the nitty gritty around property investing, starting in shares or creating a business, your group can continue to meet using the ongoing elective modules.

Where do we meet?

You can meet wherever is comfortable – at someone’s home, workplace, a community centre or quiet public space.

Who’s it for?

By joining a GIG (Girl Investment Group) you and friends and workmates can pool knowledge and resources, learn from each other’s questions and keep each other motivated and on track with your own plans and personal finances, whilst helping others at the same time. Whether you:

• Are 18 or 55
• Have never really delved into your finances before or are savvy and interested and looking for a fun way to keep motivated and inspired
• Are carrying some debt
• Have some money tucked away
• Have investments well underway
• Like to feel confident and secure in your decisions
• Are looking for a like minded crew to learn and network with

How am I supporting microfinance by joining the 6 Step Challenge?

For each GIG member, $10 is contributed to provide a micro loan for a woman in a neighbouring country who doesn’t have access to traditional lending institutes. The loan is provided along with business training until she can set up an income stream supporting herself, her family and in some cases employing others in the community. 10thousandgirl is partnering with Good Return and Opportunity International to provide microloans.

HERE ARE THE FIRST STEPS TO GETTING STARTED

Note: If someone has already put their hand up to lead your GIG and you’re joining as a member, they will be in touch with you to collect your name, email address and preferred meeting spot. Until then perhaps you want to help them collect your GIG member’s details or help organise Step 2.

STEP 1. Register Your GIG

To register a new GIG, email events@10thousandgirl.com the following info

• your CV or LinkedIn profile,
• the reason you’re interested in hosting a GIG,
• the number of girls you have ready to start, and
• the area you live/work/would like to meet in.

We’ll then email you:
1. An online form for your group to register and make your payments.
2. A Getting Started Agenda for your first casual catch up, outlining all the details your group needs to know to get started.

STEP 2. Organise An Initial Catch Up Meeting

Choose a café, local bar or someone’s home or workplace for your group to first meet. Follow the Getting Started Agenda. Make sure you’ve all registered via the online form and one person has been appointed to email 10thousandgirl your minutes including the designated shipping address you’d like your group’s materials sent to and how often and where your group is going to meet.

The core Money makeover program consists of 6 Steps. You can choose to meet weekly (program runs over 6 weeks), fortnightly (program runs over 12 weeks) or monthly (program runs over 6 months).

STEP 3. Receive Your Materials

Once your group is registered, you’ll receive your learning materials. These will be sent to your designated shipping address. You’ll also receive access to the 10thousandgirl online Member Education Hub where you can access online resources and share and interact as a group.

STEP 4. Engage Your Mentor (optional)

GIGs in the past have provided feedback saying there’s value in having an industry mentor. This could be a local financial planner, mortgage broker, accountant, solicitor or inspiring businesswoman – anyone passionate about women’s financial empowerment and who can provide insights and introductions to help your GIG learn and go on to build a great professional support network. We’ll discuss with you about what type of mentor you’d like (and if you’d like one at all!) and help you speak to your network or find a mentor for you within the 10thousandgirl network. It’s up to you and your Mentor to decide how involved you’d like them to be.

For more info on what to look for in a good mentor and for info to send interested mentors to see if they like the sound of supporting you, see the webpage GIG Mentors.

STEP 5. Set Your First Meeting!

You can set a date, time and place for your first meeting using the online Member Education Hub to communicate and coordinate with your GIG members and Mentor. Enjoy being guided by the physical and online materials to complete the program. We’re available every step of the way to support you.

STEP 6. Review, Reflect and Decide Your GIG’s Next Steps

Once your group has completed the core 6 Step program and you’ve got the basics covered, we’ll review with you to help your GIG decide next steps. As part of this we’ll pull some stories together, celebrate your wins and listen to your feedback on the program. Each member can then assess if they’d like to continue, the ones who’d like to continue can decide what topics you’re most interested in, whether your GIG wants to meet more or less regularly going forward and ways you can further maximise your Mentor and other professionals and resources to get into the more technical nitty gritty.

Elective Modules are being developed to launch early 2015, including;

• Ethical Investing
• Money Beliefs,
