Meet Erin Gourlay

Erin Gourley

Why is women’s financial education important to you?

I’ve always been motivated to educate myself financially and, as a female, I feel passionate about helping women to have independence and confidence in their own financial situation, and to understand that they don’t have to feel trapped. The thought that a man is the only financial plan is still a noose around the neck for many women.

Women are retiring with half the savings that men retire with, yet they generally live longer. This means most women don’t have enough savings to enable them to enjoy a comfortable retirement, and that’s a situation I’d love to help change.

I’ve worked with many women whose husbands have passed away, and who have never managed their own finances.

When they find themselves widowed, they’re scared and just don’t know where to start. We can break this destructive mould if we start educating women and girls early enough and teach them how to manage their own finances, for the duration of their lives.

Describe what you do for clients. Why and when does someone engage you?

The first thing we do is sit down and talk, so that I can build an understanding of what is important to them. Then we work together to design an individual strategy for success; I help my clients put their plan into action, and help them simplify the process.

I consult with the client regularly to ensure they stay on track to succeed and achieve the goals that they’ve set.

People come to me for all sorts of reasons—to secure their family’s future, to try and understand what the future looks like for them, or just to feel secure that they’re on the right path. Some people need help to understand the investment and superannuation world, to know their best options for investing, to figure out what to do with an inheritance or ensure that everything is in place and easy for their own beneficiaries.

If you had to use five words to describe your most successful clients, what would they be?

Determined, Patient, Disciplined…with a Desire to Achieve

What is the best financial words of wisdom you’ve been given and who were they from?

The best piece of financial wisdom I’ve ever heard came from my mentor, Ian Ritchie of Ritchie Advice. His mantra is: ‘It’s not what you earn, it is what you do with it that counts.’ It’s so simple and so true and I think that phrase underpins my approach to finances and financial advice. You don’t have to be wealthy to make your money work well for you.

What can clients expect at their first meeting/consultation with you?

I’m always excited to meet with a new client for the first time. We start with a casual chat about their situation—what do they want from their finances and their life? What do their finances look like right now?

Once we’ve had that initial discussion and the client has made a decision that they’d like to work with me, we get into the real detail of their situation. We work out which areas of their finances to focus on and the best ways for us to work together to help them achieve their goals and be successful.

How can clients contact you to organise an initial catch up?

Either call me on 6234 1488 or 0416 132 558, or email me at erin@ritchieadvice.com.au to arrange a time for our first meeting.
